In the heart of Cary, NC is the Triangle’s beloved universally designed, accessible and multi-sensory inclusive playground for all ages, sizes, and abilities!
DESIGNED TO PLAY TOGETHER
Applying the principles of Universal Design, Kids Together Playground assures ease of mobility for everyone. The cleverly integrated accessible and inclusive equipment across five unique play zones invites people of all abilities and ages to play together side by side, not separately.
BUILT WITHIN NATURE (NOT ON TOP OF IT)
Immersed in nature, the mature landscaping and trees offer relief on hot days, shelter picnic tables, support peaceful breaks, and form a natural boundary around the playground.

  • Fenced toddler area (aside from the one entry/exit area) and playground-wide surrounded natural boundary

  • Swings for everyone: belt, toddler, adaptive, wheelchair accessible, tire swing, and the brand new face-to-face Expression Swing
  • Sand play with accessible diggers and tables, and a "sand river" under a bridge in the preschool area
  • Climbing structures with graded ramps, monkey bars, slides (including a sensory roller slide), bridges, tunnels, and a roll-on SwayFun
  • Roam, explore, and climb the giant hillside dragon sculpture (with accessible pathways) of KATAL, the Kids Together dragon mascot — his name stands for Kids Are Together At Last
  • Covered picnic shelter onsite bathrooms — including an adult-sized changing table​ (reservation info here)!
  • Wide, winding pathways for peaceful strolls —lined with  whimsical art, unique benches, and sculptures.​
  • Regularly stocked Little Free Library outside the playground

ROOTED IN COMMUNITY-DRIVEN DESIGN & SUPPORT

Kids Together Playground was the brainchild of two elementary-aged children who wanted a playground they could visit with their sisters with disabilities; they rallied the community, held fundraisers, took public design workshops, and inspired the formation of Kids Together Inc. -- the local nonprofit that (still!) supports the playground — which helped turn their dream into a reality.

Community donations helped fund over $300,000 toward development costs. Equipment was installed with the help of over 100 volunteers. Sensory-friendly plants were planted by local families, neighbors, scout troops, and school classes. KATAL — the famed hillside dragon sculpture — and other functional art donated by Cary Visual Art.

For over 31 years, the playground has been lovingly supported by Kids Together, Inc. — the all-volunteer nonprofit with mission to raise funds and build public awareness in support of inclusive play at Kids Together Playground

How to Rent the Picnic Shelter at marla dorrel park

The perfect spot to celebrate a birthday or to enjoy a picnic lunch while playing with friends. On-site bathrooms include an adult-sized changing table.
Picnic shelter reservations are made through the Town of Cary.
